Saint Peter died in 65 CE in Roma, aged about 65. One of the twelve apostles of Jesus and a leading figure of the early Christian community, Peter was a fisherman from Galilee, originally named Simon. According to the Gospels, Jesus gave him the name Peter, meaning rock, and he is portrayed as an outspoken member of the inner circle who denied Jesus three times before the crucifixion and then became a leader of the church in Jerusalem. Catholic tradition holds that he went to Rome, became its first bishop and was martyred there under Nero, and St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City stands over his traditional burial place. The dates given are only traditional, since his exact birth and death years are not known.
