Paul the Apostle died in 66 CE in Rome, aged about 61. An early Christian apostle and missionary, Paul was born in Tarsus, a Jewish Roman citizen who was known at first as Saul and who persecuted the followers of Jesus. According to the New Testament, he was converted by a vision on the road to Damascus, and he then became the leading missionary to the non-Jewish world, founding churches in Asia Minor, Greece and elsewhere on several journeys. Thirteen letters in the New Testament are attributed to him, and seven are accepted by almost all scholars as authentic, which are the earliest Christian writings. Tradition holds that he was executed in Rome under Nero.
