Hadrian was born on 24 January 76 CE in Italica. The fourteenth Roman emperor, Hadrian was born in Spain and succeeded his relative Trajan in 117. Unlike his predecessor, he focused on consolidating the empire rather than expanding it, abandoning some conquered territories in Mesopotamia and spending much of his reign traveling through the provinces. He ordered the building of Hadrian's Wall in northern Britain and the rebuilding of the Pantheon in Rome, and he was an admirer of Greek culture. His reign saw the Bar Kokhba revolt in Judea, which was harshly suppressed. He chose Antoninus Pius as his successor, who was followed by Marcus Aurelius.
