Friedrich Engels died on 5 August 1895 in London, aged 74. A German philosopher and social theorist, Engels was the son of a textile manufacturer who worked in the family's mill in Manchester. His book The Condition of the Working Class in England, based on direct observation, drew attention to the effects of industrialization. He formed a lifelong partnership with Karl Marx, with whom he wrote The Communist Manifesto in 1848, and he supported Marx financially for years. After Marx's death in 1883 he edited and published the second and third volumes of Das Kapital. His own works, including Anti-Dühring and The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, helped to shape Marxist thought.
