Operation Condor was a campaign of political repression and state terrorism carried out jointly by the military dictatorships of the Southern Cone of South America. Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and later Brazil cooperated to track, kidnap and kill political opponents who had fled across borders, sharing information and operating across frontiers. Its formal launch is dated to a meeting of intelligence chiefs in Santiago organised by the Chilean secret police under Augusto Pinochet. Operation Condor also reached beyond the continent, with the 1976 car-bomb assassination of the Chilean exile Orlando Letelier in Washington. The United States was aware of the operation and gave it some support. Documents found in Paraguay in the 1990s helped reveal its scale.
