Anna Akhmatova died on 5 March 1966 in Domodedovo, aged 76. A Russian poet, Akhmatova was a leading voice of the Acmeist movement and became one of the great poets of the twentieth century. Her early lyric verse made her famous in St Petersburg, and her later works, Requiem and Poem Without a Hero, bore witness to the terror of the Stalin years, when her son was imprisoned and her husband had been executed. She was denounced by the authorities in 1946 and expelled from the Writers' Union, and she circulated her work in secret, with friends memorizing the verses. Her reputation was restored in the Thaw, and she was honored abroad before her death.
