The Stade Velodrome is a football stadium in Marseille, in southern France, and the home of Olympique de Marseille. It opened in the late 1930s and was named after the cycle track that originally surrounded the pitch. The stadium was used for the 1938 and 1998 FIFA World Cups and for the European Championships of 1984 and 2016, and it has been enlarged and rebuilt several times. A major renovation completed in 2014 added a curved roof over the stands, and it became the biggest club stadium in France, with a capacity of about sixty-seven thousand. The fans of Marseille are known for the intense atmosphere they create there.
