Construction of Selimiye Mosque

1574

The Selimiye Mosque is a mosque in Edirne, in north-western Turkey, built for the Ottoman sultan Selim II. It was designed by Mimar Sinan, the chief imperial architect, who considered it his masterpiece and described it as the work of his mastery. A single large dome rests on eight massive piers, creating a wide, light-filled interior that rivals the dome of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. Four slender minarets rise from its corners, and the complex included a school and a covered market. The mosque is regarded as one of the high points of Ottoman architecture and has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
