Construction of Millau Viaduct

14 December 2004

The Millau Viaduct carries the A75 motorway across the valley of the river Tarn in southern France, near the town of Millau. Designed by the engineer Michel Virlogeux with the architect Norman Foster, it is a cable-stayed bridge with seven slim concrete piers, the tallest of which reaches higher than the Eiffel Tower. The road deck is about 270 metres above the valley floor at its highest point. It opened in 2004 after about three years of construction, and was built to relieve the traffic jams that formed every summer in Millau on the way to the Mediterranean. It is among the tallest bridges in the world.
