The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi stands in the city of Turkistan in southern Kazakhstan. Timur ordered it built over the tomb of the Sufi poet and teacher Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, who died in the 12th century and whose spiritual order was influential among the Turkic peoples. Construction began in 1389 but was never finished, because Timur died in 1405, and the unfinished state of the entrance portal is still visible. It is one of the largest brick-vaulted structures from the Timurid era, with a great dome, and its builders tested techniques there that were later used in Samarkand. Several Kazakh khans are also buried in it. UNESCO inscribed it in 2003, the first World Heritage Site in Kazakhstan.
