Construction of Los Angeles International Airport

1 October 1928

Los Angeles International Airport, known as LAX, began as an airfield on land used for farming, which the city of Los Angeles leased. It was originally called Mines Field after William W. Mines, the real estate agent who helped arrange the lease. It started as a modest field used by the military and by private pilots, and in the 1930s it was developed into a municipal airport. Commercial airline service moved there in the late 1940s, and it was later renamed and rebuilt on a much larger scale. Today it is one of the world's busiest airports and a key gateway for travel between North America and the Pacific.
