The Frauenkirche, or Cathedral of Our Dear Lady, is the seat of the archbishop of Munich and Freising and a symbol of the city. It is a late Gothic brick hall church, built in the second half of the 15th century to the design of the architect Jörg von Halsbach and consecrated in 1494. Its two towers, nearly one hundred meters high, were capped with their characteristic onion domes in the 1520s. A local rule holds that no building in the city center should be higher than the towers, and a vote in 2004 confirmed a height limit. The cathedral contains the tomb of Emperor Louis IV, and legend tells that a footprint in the entrance hall was left by the devil. It was badly damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt.
