Construction of Bratislava Castle

1431

Bratislava Castle is a rectangular castle on a rocky hill above the Danube in the Slovak capital. The hill was fortified since prehistoric times, with Celtic, Roman and Great Moravian settlements, and a stone castle stood there in the Middle Ages. In the 1430s King Sigismund of Luxembourg had the castle rebuilt and strengthened. After the Ottomans took Buda in 1541, Bratislava, then Pressburg, became the Hungarian capital and coronation city, and the castle was redone in Renaissance style and later became a royal residence under Maria Theresa. It burned down in 1811 and stood as a ruin until reconstruction in the 20th century. Today it houses parts of the Slovak National Museum and is a symbol of the city.
