Balmoral Castle is a country residence of the British royal family in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, on the River Dee. The estate was bought by Prince Albert in 1852 for Queen Victoria, who loved the Highlands, and the old house on it was replaced by a new castle designed by William Smith of Aberdeen and completed in the 1850s. Built in the Scots baronial style, it is a private property of the monarch rather than a possession of the state. The royal family traditionally spends part of the summer there, and the grounds are open to visitors in season. Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral in September 2022.
