Colchis was an ancient region and kingdom on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, in what is now western Georgia. In Greek mythology it was the land of King Aeëtes and the sorceress Medea, and the destination of Jason and the Argonauts, who sailed there to seek the Golden Fleece. Greek colonists founded trading towns on its coast, such as Phasis at the mouth of the Rioni River, and its people were known for their metalworking and for exports of timber, flax and other goods. Colchis was later absorbed into the Kingdom of Pontus and then came under Roman influence, and in later centuries its territory became the kingdom of Lazica.
