The Second Intermediate Period was an era in ancient Egypt between the Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom, when the country was politically divided. The central government weakened, and the Hyksos, a people of Canaanite origin, took control of the Nile Delta and ruled from the city of Avaris, while Egyptian kings of the Thebes region held on in the south. The Hyksos brought new technology, including horse-drawn chariots, improved bronze working and the composite bow. The Theban rulers eventually fought back, and Kamose and then Ahmose I drove the Hyksos out and reunited Egypt. This marked the start of the New Kingdom, the period of Egypt's greatest power.
