Fifteenth Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 1,650 BCE to 1,550 BCE

The Fifteenth Dynasty of Egypt was the dynasty of the Hyksos, rulers of foreign origin who governed Lower Egypt from their capital, Avaris, in the eastern Nile Delta during the Second Intermediate Period. The name Hyksos means rulers of foreign lands. They were people from Canaan and western Asia who had settled in the Delta and eventually took power, and kings such as Khayan and Apepi are known. They are credited with introducing horse-drawn chariots, the composite bow and improved bronze weapons to Egypt. The rival Theban rulers of the Seventeenth Dynasty, among them Seqenenre Tao and Kamose, fought them, and Ahmose I expelled them and founded the Eighteenth Dynasty, starting the New Kingdom. Later Egyptian tradition portrayed the Hyksos as violent invaders, while modern historians see a more gradual process.
