Sixteenth Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 1,650 BCE to 1,580 BCE

The Sixteenth Dynasty of Egypt was a short-lived line of kings from the Second Intermediate Period, a time when Egypt was divided and the north was controlled by the foreign Hyksos rulers of the Fifteenth Dynasty. Many scholars place the Sixteenth Dynasty in Thebes, in the south, where its rulers held power over Upper Egypt, though some may have been subordinate to the Hyksos. The evidence for these kings is limited, coming mostly from a few monuments, scarabs and the later king lists, and their order and identity are disputed. The Theban rulers of the following Seventeenth Dynasty began the wars against the Hyksos that ended in their expulsion, and Ahmose I went on to found the New Kingdom.
