The Cairo Conference, also known as the Sextant Conference, brought together US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek to plan the war against Japan. It ended in the Cairo Declaration, which said the Allies would fight until Japan surrendered unconditionally, that Japan would be stripped of territories it had seized since 1914, that Manchuria and Taiwan would be returned to China, and that Korea would become free and independent in due course. It was the only wartime meeting attended by Chiang. Roosevelt and Churchill then went on to Tehran to meet Stalin, and the Cairo statement later shaped postwar settlements in East Asia.
