Black September

from 6 September 1970 to 17 July 1971

Black September was the armed confrontation in Jordan between King Hussein's army and the Palestine Liberation Organization, whose fighters had built a state within a state on Jordanian territory. The crisis was triggered by the hijacking of several airliners by a PLO faction, which were flown to Dawson's Field in Jordan and blown up. The king ordered the army to act, and heavy fighting followed in Amman and other cities. Syria sent tanks to support the PLO but withdrew under pressure, and a ceasefire was mediated by Egypt's president Nasser, who died the next day. Fighting resumed, and by July 1971 the PLO had been driven out of Jordan to Lebanon. Thousands were killed, and a group named Black September later carried out the Munich Olympics attack of 1972.
