Venera 7 was a Soviet space probe that became the first spacecraft to land on another planet and transmit data from its surface. It was launched toward Venus in 1970 and entered the atmosphere in December. Its parachute partly failed during descent, and it hit the surface at high speed, but it survived and sent a weak signal for about twenty minutes. The probe recorded a surface temperature of around 470 degrees Celsius, and a pressure about ninety times that of Earth's atmosphere, much higher than scientists had expected. Later Venera landers took pictures of the surface.
