Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 in Swami Vivekananda's Ancestral House & Cultural Centre. An Indian Hindu monk and philosopher, Vivekananda was the chief disciple of the mystic Ramakrishna. He became widely known after his speech at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893, in which he opened with the words sisters and brothers of America and presented Hinduism as a tolerant and universal faith. He spent several years lecturing in the United States and Europe, and founded the Ramakrishna Mission in India to carry out educational and charitable work. His teachings on yoga, Vedanta and service to humanity influenced the Indian national movement and the spread of Hindu ideas in the West.
