Pierre de Coubertin was born on 1 January 1863 in 7th arrondissement of Paris. A French educator and historian, Coubertin was the founder of the modern Olympic movement. Inspired by the educational role of sports in English public schools and by the ancient Olympic Games, he organized a congress in Paris in 1894 that created the International Olympic Committee, and the first modern Games were held in Athens in 1896. He served as the IOC's second president until 1925, and designed the Olympic rings and motto in the early years. He believed in amateur sport and in sport as a means of promoting peace and understanding. He also won a gold medal for literature at the 1912 Olympics under a pseudonym.
