Shaka Zulu was born around 1787 in Mthethwa Paramountcy. The founder of the Zulu Kingdom, Shaka was the son of a Zulu chief and rose to lead the clan, then built a powerful state in southern Africa in the early nineteenth century. He is credited with reforming military organization, introducing a short stabbing spear, the iklwa, new tactics such as the buffalo horn formation and a disciplined regimental system. His campaigns provoked the Mfecane, a period of upheaval and migration across the region, though historians debate the scale of his role. Accounts of his cruelty, many written by European observers, are contested. He was assassinated by his half-brothers.
