Ray Bradbury was born on 22 August 1920 in Waukegan. An American author, Bradbury was one of the best-known writers of science fiction and fantasy, though he often preferred to be described as a writer of fantasies. His books include The Martian Chronicles, a set of linked stories about the colonization of Mars, The Illustrated Man, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Fahrenheit 451, a dystopian novel about a society that burns books. He wrote hundreds of short stories, plays and poems, as well as screenplays, including for the film Moby Dick. He was an advocate of libraries, and a lifelong critic of technology that isolates people.
