Pran was born on 12 February 1920 in Lahore. An Indian actor, Pran was among the best-known screen villains in Hindi cinema, with a career that lasted more than six decades. After starting in the Lahore film industry, he moved to Bombay after Partition, and worked in numerous films, becoming known for his menacing roles in Madhumati, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Upkar and Zanjeer. He later played character parts, often as a benevolent figure. His villainy was so convincing that parents are said to have stopped naming their sons Pran. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan.
