Muhammadu Buhari was born on 17 December 1942 in Daura. A Nigerian general and politician, Buhari ruled the country as military head of state in 1983-1985 after a coup, with a campaign of discipline against corruption. Decades later, as a civilian, he won the 2015 presidential election, the first time an opposition candidate defeated a sitting president in Nigeria, and was re-elected in 2019. His administration fought the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast and promised to tackle corruption, but faced a recession, rising insecurity, and criticism over a lengthy absence for medical treatment abroad. He stepped down in 2023 after two terms.
