The Euphrasian Basilica stands in Porec, on the Istrian coast of Croatia, and is one of the best-preserved early Christian churches on the Mediterranean. It was built in the sixth century under Bishop Euphrasius, when the region was part of the Byzantine sphere, on the site of an earlier basilica and Roman buildings whose remains can still be seen beside it. The church is famous for its gold-ground mosaics, especially those in the apse, which show the Virgin and Child, angels, saints and the bishop himself holding a model of his church. The complex includes an atrium, a baptistery and a bishop's palace. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997.
