Uthman ibn Affan was born around 575 CE in Mecca. The third caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate, Uthman ibn Affan was an early convert to Islam, a wealthy merchant of the Umayyad clan and a son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, who married two of his daughters in succession. Chosen by a council after the death of Umar, he oversaw further expansion of the empire into Persia, North Africa and Cyprus, and he ordered the preparation of a standard written version of the Quran. His reign was criticized for favoring his relatives with offices and wealth, which provoked discontent among rebels from Egypt and Iraq. He was killed in his home in Medina, which led to the first civil war.
