Mikhail Bakunin was born on 30 May 1814 in Priamukhino. A Russian revolutionary and theorist, Bakunin was one of the founders of the anarchist movement. Born into the nobility, he left the army and studied philosophy in Berlin before joining uprisings across Europe in 1848-49. Imprisoned in Russia and exiled to Siberia, he escaped via Japan to the West. He opposed the state, organized religion and capitalism, advocating collective ownership and federation of free communities. His bitter dispute with Karl Marx in the First International, over authoritarian methods, split the workers' movement and lasted beyond his death. His works include God and the State.
