Kingdom of Hanover

from 12 October 1814 to 20 September 1866

The Kingdom of Hanover was a German state in the north of the German lands, created at the Congress of Vienna, when the Electorate of Hanover, ruled by the British royal family, was raised to a kingdom. It remained in personal union with the United Kingdom until the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, as Hanoverian law excluded women from the succession, so the throne passed to her uncle, Ernest Augustus. The kingdom was home to the University of Gottingen, where the Gottingen Seven, a group of professors who protested against the abolition of the constitution, were dismissed. In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, Hanover sided with Austria, and after its defeat, Prussia annexed it.
