Since 1815 sovereign state, member of the German Confederation, annexed by Prussia in 1866, indirect successor of the Kurfüstentum of Hesse, a territory of Holy Roman Empire. It was established in 1814 in what is now Germany and lasted until August 1866 (about 53 years). It was part of the German Confederation.
