Louis de Funès was born on 31 July 1914 in Courbevoie. A French actor and comedian, de Funes was famous for his hyperactive, grimacing, comic style, playing irritable, authoritarian and often cowardly characters. After years in small roles, he became a star in the 1960s with films such as The Gendarme of Saint-Tropez, The Sheep Has Five Legs and Fantomas, and he had huge box-office successes with Le Grand Restaurant and The Wing or the Thigh. He often worked with Bourvil, with whom he made The Great Walk (La Grande Vadrouille), which was a record-breaking hit in France. He retired after a heart attack in 1975.
