Zanzibar Revolution

12 January 1964

The Zanzibar Revolution overthrew the Sultan of Zanzibar and his Arab-dominated government, a few weeks after the islands became independent from Britain. The revolt was led by the Afro-Shirazi Party, which represented the African majority, and by a Ugandan-born militant called John Okello, who led armed fighters. The sultan fled, and a republic was proclaimed with Abeid Karume as president. The revolution was accompanied by violence, in which many Arabs and South Asians were killed, and many more were expelled or fled. A few months later, Zanzibar joined with the mainland state of Tanganyika to form Tanzania. The events of January are celebrated as a national holiday on the islands.
