Ingmar Bergman was born on 14 July 1918 in Uppsala. A Swedish director and writer who worked in both film and theatre, Bergman made some of the most admired films in the history of cinema. The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries brought him international fame in the late 1950s, and he explored intense psychological drama in works such as Persona, Cries and Whispers and Scenes from a Marriage. His 1982 film Fanny and Alexander won several Academy Awards. His recurring themes include faith and doubt, death, family tensions and the struggles of intimate relationships. He worked repeatedly with actors such as Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow and the cinematographer Sven Nykvist, and he lived for years on the island of Fårö.
