Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in Mvezo. A South African lawyer and political leader, Mandela became the best-known figure in the struggle against apartheid, the system of racial segregation enforced by the white minority government. A leader of the African National Congress, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 and spent twenty-seven years in prison, most of them on Robben Island. After his release in 1990 he negotiated with President F. W. de Klerk the end of apartheid, and they shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He was elected the country's first black president in 1994 and promoted national reconciliation, including the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
