The Texas Revolution was a rebellion by settlers and Tejano residents of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas against the central government of Mexico. It began over disputes about the abolition of the federal constitution of 1824 and centralized rule, and the first shots were fired at Gonzales. The Texans suffered defeat and the loss of their garrison at the Alamo and the Goliad massacre, but they won a decisive victory at San Jacinto under Sam Houston, where the Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was captured. He was forced to sign treaties recognizing Texan independence, although Mexico refused to accept them. The Republic of Texas existed until 1845, when it was annexed to the United States.
