George V was born on 3 June 1865 in Marlborough House. A British monarch of the House of Windsor, George V reigned from 1910 until his death and led the country through the First World War. In 1917, amid anti-German feeling, he changed the royal house name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor. His reign saw the Irish crisis and the partition of Ireland, the rise of the Labour Party, the General Strike of 1926 and the Statute of Westminster that recognized the independence of the dominions. He made the first royal Christmas radio broadcast in 1932. He was the grandfather of Elizabeth II, and his sons Edward VIII and George VI succeeded him.
