Founding of Nokia

12 May 1865

Nokia began as a wood-pulp mill. Fredrik Idestam founded it in 1865 in Tampere, Finland, and soon moved operations to the banks of the Nokianvirta river, from which the company took its name. In 1967 it merged with the Finnish Rubber Works and the Finnish Cable Works, forming a conglomerate that made tires, cables and electronics. In the 1990s Nokia focused on telecommunications and became the world's largest mobile phone maker, helped by the success of the GSM standard. It lost the lead to smartphones, sold its handset business to Microsoft in 2014, and now concentrates on network equipment.
