Emma Goldman was born on 27 June 1869 in Kaunas. A Russian-born anarchist and feminist, Goldman emigrated to the United States as a teenager and became one of the most prominent radical voices of her time. She lectured and wrote on anarchism, birth control, free speech and the rights of workers, and published the magazine Mother Earth. She was repeatedly arrested and imprisoned, and in 1919 she was deported to Russia, where she became disillusioned by the Bolshevik regime and wrote My Disillusionment in Russia. She later lived in Europe and Canada, supporting the anarchists in the Spanish Civil War. Her memoir Living My Life is a classic of radical history.
