The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's largest natural history museums, located on the west side of Central Park in Manhattan. It was founded in the spring of 1869, with the support of wealthy New Yorkers and the naturalist Albert Bickmore, who proposed the idea, and it moved to its present site in the 1870s. Its collections run to tens of millions of specimens and artefacts and include dinosaur skeletons, meteorites, minerals and cultural objects from around the world. The Hayden Planetarium and the famous halls of dioramas are among its best-known features. The museum also conducts scientific research and sends expeditions to study life on Earth and the universe.
