Beatrix of the Netherlands was born on 31 January 1938 in Baarn. Queen of the Netherlands from 1980 to 2013, Beatrix came to the throne when her mother, Juliana, abdicated, and herself abdicated in favor of her son Willem-Alexander. As a princess, she studied law at Leiden, and her marriage in 1966 to the German diplomat Claus von Amsberg caused controversy because of his wartime service in the Hitler Youth and the German army. As queen she fulfilled mainly ceremonial duties, but played a role in the formation of governments. She was respected for her dedication and for her speeches, and remained a popular figure after her abdication with the title Princess.
