Islam Karimov was born on 30 January 1938 in Samarkand. An Uzbek politician, Karimov was the first president of independent Uzbekistan, ruling from the collapse of the Soviet Union until his death. A former Communist Party chief of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, he declared independence in 1991 and was elected president, and held power through referendums and elections that were not seen as free. His government suppressed political opposition and the press, and was widely criticized by human rights groups, especially after the 2005 Andijan events, in which security forces fired on protesters. Foreign policy shifted between Russia, the United States and China. He was succeeded by Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
