Ariel Sharon was born on 27 February 1928 in Kfar Malal. An Israeli general and politician, Sharon fought in the 1948 war and rose through the army, founding the commando Unit 101 and commanding forces in the Six-Day War and Yom Kippur War. As defense minister he led the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, and was found indirectly responsible for the Sabra and Shatila massacre carried out by Christian militiamen, which forced his resignation. A longtime figure of the right, he became prime minister in 2001, building the West Bank barrier and in 2005 withdrawing Israeli settlers and troops from the Gaza Strip. He suffered a massive stroke in 2006 and remained in a coma until his death.
