The Battle of Waterloo was fought near the village of Waterloo, south of Brussels in what is now Belgium, and it ended the career of Napoleon Bonaparte, who had returned from exile on Elba in the episode known as the Hundred Days. His French army faced the Anglo-allied army of the Duke of Wellington, and the Prussian army of Field Marshal Blucher. Wellington held a defensive position through the day against repeated French attacks, and the arrival of the Prussians on Napoleon's flank turned the battle. The Imperial Guard was repulsed and the French army collapsed. Napoleon abdicated again and was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena.
