The Archduchy of Austria was a territory of the Holy Roman Empire and the core of the Habsburg lands. The rulers of the duchy created the title of archduke through the forged document known as the Privilegium Maius, produced for Duke Rudolf IV, who wanted to match the prestige of the prince-electors. The title was only formally recognised by the emperor Frederick III, himself a Habsburg, who used it. The archduchy was divided into Lower and Upper Austria, with Vienna as its main city, and the Habsburgs added many other territories, eventually forming a large empire. The archduchy remained part of the Habsburg monarchy until the end of the First World War.
