Advance Australia Fair

November 1878

Advance Australia Fair is the national anthem of Australia. It was written by the Scottish-born composer Peter Dodds McCormick, and was first performed in Sydney in late 1878. It became popular around the time of Federation in 1901 and was sung at various occasions, but for many decades the official anthem was God Save the Queen. After polls and debate in the 1970s, Advance Australia Fair was chosen by a national vote in 1977, and it was formally declared the anthem in 1984, with some of the words changed, such as changing the opening line from Australia's sons to Australians all. In 2021, the words were changed again, to replace young and free with one and free.
