The 2025 Nepalese Gen Z protests were anti-government demonstrations led largely by young people, set off by a government ban on a number of social media platforms, but fuelled by wider anger over corruption and the privileges of the children of politicians. Security forces opened fire on protesters in Kathmandu, killing a number of people, and the unrest escalated the next day, with demonstrators setting fire to parliament and the homes of politicians. Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli resigned. The army took control of security, and former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was named interim prime minister, with elections called for 2026. The protests were among the deadliest in Nepal in recent decades.
