The Tigray war was an armed conflict in northern Ethiopia between the Ethiopian federal government, backed by Eritrean forces and regional militias from Amhara, and the Tigray People's Liberation Front, which had governed the Tigray Region. It broke out in early November 2020 after a dispute over the federal government's authority and the TPLF's decision to hold regional elections, and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered a military offensive. The fighting spread into the Amhara and Afar regions and was marked by massacres, sexual violence and a blockade that caused severe hunger. Estimates of the number of dead vary enormously, with some very high. The war ended with an agreement signed in Pretoria in November 2022.
