Xin dynasty

from 9 CE to 23 CE

The Xin dynasty was a short-lived Chinese dynasty founded by Wang Mang, a minister and relative by marriage of the Han emperors, who took the throne in 9 CE and so interrupted the Han dynasty into Former and Later Han periods. Wang Mang presented himself as a restorer of ancient Zhou ideals and introduced sweeping reforms, including a plan to nationalise land and to redistribute it, a ban on the sale of slaves, new currencies and state monopolies. The reforms were unpopular and badly carried out, and floods of the Yellow River and peasant revolts such as the Red Eyebrows rebellion weakened the regime. Wang Mang was killed in 23 CE, and the Han line was restored by Emperor Guangwu.
